Abstract:
The world's first molecular nanotechnology company, Zyvex Technologies, and NanoFusing LLC; a subsidiary of APV Engineered Coatings, one of Ohio's first paint and coatings manufacturers, have announced a partnership to provide nano-enhanced concentrates and products to the infrastructure markets and OEM industries.
Carbon based nanomaterials are widely recognized as the strongest materials known to man. Zyvex was the first company to deliver commercial products powered by carbon nanotubes (CNT) with sporting goods in 2004 and today with lightweight marine and automotive applications.
Leveraging the nanotechnology scientific resources of Zyvex and the manufacturing and nanotube dispersing expertise of NanoFusing LLC, the companies will produce custom carbon nanotube-enhanced concentrates to be implemented into materials for superior strength and performance, along with conductive, optical, and lightweight properties.
Nanotechnology continues to revolutionize the materials industry. "Nanotechnology advances from our scientists have already improved a wide range of products, from baseball bats to boats and bridges," says Lance Criscuolo, president of Zyvex Technologies. "After leading the way with a decade of research and development and now in partnership with NanoFusing LLC, we're looking forward to improving the performance of products across an even greater list of commercial and industrial applications, from better tires to tougher pipeline coatings," noted Criscuolo.
APV has been an innovator of high performance coating formulations and processing technologies since its founding in 1878. Known in the early 20th century for its Japanning Enamel, APV provided this black paint to the Ford Motor Company for the Model T. Since then, APV has formulated advanced custom coatings that service a variety of industries. Developments include an emphasis on architectural and industrial applications such as a reflective roof coating, engineered to provide 20 years of energy savings for a structure and water-based tire tread striping inks that contains zero VOCs to significantly reduce emissions in tire production plants. The official partnership between NanoFusing LLC and Zyvex leverages a history between the companies since Zyvex relocated to Ohio in 2008. The companies have already invested considerable engineering and processing development to manufacture the Zyvex carbon nanotube enhanced adhesive Epovex which is used in automotive applications.
Currently helping the Genoa Racing team stay longer on the winning track, Epovex "glues" the car back together for a permanent repair. Results are stronger than welding. The team started 2011 with a victory in the prestigious Mobil 1, 12 Hours of Sebring in March and also won at two other classic American tracks, Lime Rock Park and Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. Epovex Adhesive can be used on future carbon fiber car repairs, keeping costs and repair time to a minimum.
"Our company works diligently to provide innovative coating and manufacturing solutions to our customers, including automotive, aerospace, aviation and marine leaders," says Thomas Venarge, president of APV Engineered Coatings. "NanoFusing LLC, our business that houses the worlds' safest carbon nanotube dispersion process, is a great example of this effort. When used in conjunction with Zyvex's CNT expertise and Kentera technology, we are able to produce the highest quality dispersions and deliver these solutions to help our customers produce better, stronger products. Another example of delivering solutions is our development of the worlds' only curable jet printer ink. With decades of servicing the tire industry, we were informed about concerns with traceability of finished tires; so we partnered with an ink jet hardware manufacturer and provided codes for real time traceability to the largest tire producers in the world," noted Venarge.
The first application for this partnership is expected to be with a large automotive supplier that produces various engine and drive train components for many commercial vehicle manufacturers. Nano-enhanced coatings are expected to be used to make tougher, more fuel efficient semi-trucks and reliable engines.
NanoFusingTM, NanoFusing LLC's proprietary CNT dispersing process, homogenously disperses carbon nanotubes into liquid resins and materials (host matrix) safely. The unique Kentera technology from Zyvex creates chemical bonds on carbon nanotubes which allow them to connect to the host matrix creating a sustained and stable bond between the molecules and materials.
"This unique process allows us to create not only stronger materials, but also to take advantage of the inherent electrical properties of carbon nanotubes in ways that were previously impossible," says Dr. Nagesh Potluri, Chief Scientist at Zyvex Technologies.
