CNSE Welcomes Record Number of Students, Majority of Whom are New Yorkers, for Prestigious Summer Internship Program

Albany, NY | Posted on June 12th, 2013

Further reinforcing Governor Andrew M. Cuomo's educational initiatives that are preparing New York's workforce for a growing number of high-tech career opportunities, SUNY's College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering (CNSE) is welcoming the largest-ever class for its prestigious Summer Internship Program, consisting of 45 undergraduate students, including 34 New York natives who reside in eight regions across the state.

"Further underpinning Governor Andrew Cuomo's efforts to catalyze high-tech growth and connect businesses with a world-class workforce, CNSE is proud to see heightened interest in this prestigious internship experience by undergraduates from across New York State and around the world," said Dr. Alain E. Kaloyeros, CNSE Senior Vice President and CEO. "These students will spend the summer engaged in unparalleled nanotechnology-based education and research at CNSE, underscoring New York's reputation as a hub for developing our nation's best and brightest young scientists and engineers."

Chosen from nearly 150 applicants, the students have an average GPA of 3.7. A majority of this year's summer interns are currently enrolled at a host of State University of New York (SUNY) schools, including CNSE, the University at Albany, Binghamton University, Geneseo, Oswego, Potsdam, and the University at Buffalo. Students also attend colleges and universities that include Arizona State University, Boston College, Clarkson University, California Institute of Technology, Harvard University, Pennsylvania State University, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Union College, and the University of Rochester, among others.

The 10-week program runs through August 9, offering hands-on experience in which students will utilize the state-of-the-art equipment and facilities at CNSE, the most advanced research enterprise of its kind in the world. The interns will be introduced to leading-edge concepts in the areas of nanoscience, nanoengineering, nanobioscience, and nanoeconomics that are opening the doors to opportunities in New York's expanding innovation economy.

Their research will cover a range of areas, including cellular interactions with nanomaterials used in drug targeting; development of gold-metal oxide nanocomposites for plasmonics-based harsh environment sensors; photoelectron emission from quantum dots; and tungsten deposition and thickness measurement for hot electron transport studies, among others.

Students taking part in this rigorous scientific program not only work closely with leading CNSE faculty members who act as one-on-one mentors, but they also attend seminars on cutting-edge nanotechnology-based research topics. Additionally, as part of the program's capstone, each intern will share the results of his or her individual work by presenting a research poster.

In total, more than 250 students have now participated in the program since its inception in 2004.

About UAlbany NanoCollege
CNSE is the first college in the world dedicated to education, research, development, and deployment in the emerging disciplines of nanoscience, nanoengineering, nanobioscience, and nanoeconomics. With more than $14 billion in high-tech investments, CNSE represents the world's most advanced university-driven research enterprise, offering students a one-of-a-kind academic experience and providing over 300 corporate partners with access to an unmatched ecosystem for leading-edge R&D and commercialization of nanoelectronics and nanotechnology innovations. CNSE’s footprint spans upstate New York, including its Albany NanoTech Complex, an 800,000-square-foot megaplex with the only fully-integrated, 300mm wafer, computer chip pilot prototyping and demonstration line within 85,000 square feet of Class 1 capable cleanrooms. More than 3,100 scientists, researchers, engineers, students, and faculty work here, from companies including IBM, Intel, GlobalFoundries, SEMATECH, Samsung, TSMC, Toshiba, Applied Materials, Tokyo Electron, ASML, and Lam Research. An expansion now underway, part of which will house the world's first Global 450mm Consortium, will add nearly 500,000 square feet of next-generation infrastructure, an additional 50,000 square feet of Class 1 capable cleanrooms, and more than 1,000 scientists, researchers, and engineers from CNSE and global corporations. In addition, CNSE¹s Solar Energy Development Center in Halfmoon provides a prototyping and demonstration line for next-generation CIGS thin-film solar cells, supporting its leadership of the U.S. Photovoltaic Manufacturing Consortium (PVMC). CNSE’s Smart System Technology and Commercialization Center of Excellence (STC) in Rochester offers state-of-the-art capabilities for MEMS fabrication and packaging. CNSE also co-founded and manages operations at the Computer Chip Commercialization Center at SUNYIT in Utica and is a co-founder of the Nanotechnology Innovation and Commercialization Excelerator in Syracuse.
