Scientists Track Dynamic Behavior of Nanofiber Composites

Iran | Posted on March 10th, 2010

"Obtaining a mechanical response for nanocomposites subjected to constant dynamic load" was the goal of the research, Seyed M. Hasheminejad, one of the researchers at Iran University of Science and Technology, explained to the Iran Nanotechnology Initiative Council.

"The effects of damping of inhomogeneities (nanofibers) in the behavior of mechanical structures made of these inhomogeneties were studied. Prior to this, such effects were neglected so that it was assumed that the behavior of the structures is independent of size of inhomogenities. During this research it was revealed that some assumption had been erroneous," he added.

In this research, the governing equations for surface effects at nano scale were derived first. Next, applying the available analytical approach, the problem was solved without considering the surface effects. Finally, by modifying the boundary conditions, the problem was resolved to include the mentioned effects and obtain a comprehensive solution.

The results of the research were presented both in analytical and numerical forms. Propagation velocity, damping of longitudinal and shear waves in the aluminum-based nanocomposite have been obtained numerically.

These results were calculated for two types of hard and soft fibers separately. Also, a vast domain for the frequency for the input wave has been taken into account. Moreover, the research includes some result and discussions concerning the dynamically influential properties of the nanocomposite.
