Abstract:
Dongbu HiTek today announced that it has begun supplying CCTV image sensors to Brigates, Inc, a fabless Chinese company specializing in the development of image sensors for surveillance applications. Currently supplying Brigates with D1 resolution (0.44 Mpixel) CMOS image sensors, the Korean specialty foundry expects to develop higher HD 720P resolution sensors with Brigates in the second-half of this year.
China's interest in CCTV surveillance may be increasing due in part to the mainland hosting more and more international events such as Shanghai Expo and the Guangzhou Asian Games. According to some estimates, the Chinese CCTV market has steadily grown from 47.5 billion yuan in 2009 to 65 billion yuan (about US$10.7 billion) in 2012.
Dongbu HiTek's continuing collaboration with Brigates is expected to produce an HD 720P CMOS image sensor that supports China's growing demand for higher resolution CCTV facial recognition and license plate identification. Dongbu HiTek is well positioned to support Chinese fabless customers with specialty chips and foundry services from its offices in Shanghai, Beijing and Shenzhen.
Over the past five years, Dongbu HiTek has increasingly focused on serving specialized applications where it can achieve higher profit margins in return for adding higher value. Within the image sensor segment, for example, the company has emerged a key supplier of specialty sensor chips for automobiles, medical equipment, CCTV, and game consoles.
In forecasting growth of the worldwide image sensor market, iSuppli estimates that the market for specialized sensors will grow faster than the sensors targeting mainstream mobile phone and digital camera applications.
