Home > Press > Inaugural Baccalaureate Class Among CNSE Graduates to Pursue Opportunities in New York: Half of undergrads from pioneering class to seek graduate degrees at CNSE; majority of master’s and doctoral degree recipients land high-tech jobs in state’s emerging nanotech industry
Abstract:
Advancing Governor Andrew Cuomo's vision in building a world-class high-tech workforce to bolster New York's globally recognized nanotechnology industry, 30 students at SUNY's College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering (CNSE) - including CNSE's inaugural class of undergraduates - will receive degrees this weekend, with most choosing to remain in New York to further their education or embark on new careers in the nanoelectronics industry.
"I am delighted to congratulate this exemplary class of graduates from CNSE, and in particular, the pioneering students who represent the first graduates of CNSE's groundbreaking baccalaureate programs in Nanoscale Science and Nanoscale Engineering," said SUNY Chancellor Nancy L. Zimpher. "This achievement is testament not only to their dedication and perseverance in completing this unique educational paradigm, but also to the power of SUNY in ensuring that students have access to both first-rate education and exciting, game-changing careers."
"In supporting Governor Andrew Cuomo's innovative blueprint for providing students with unparalleled educational opportunities that connect them to the growing number of jobs in New York's nanotechnology-enabled economy, and on behalf of SUNY's College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering, I am honored to congratulate our newest graduates," said CNSE Vice President for Academic Affairs and Chief Academic Officer Dr. Robert Geer. "We are especially proud of our inaugural class of undergraduate students, who have truly broken new ground in 21st century nanoscale education and research, and are thrilled that so many of our degree recipients have chosen to remain in New York to pursue their educational and career goals."
In all, 30 CNSE students, including 19 New York natives and five international students, will receive degrees during commencement ceremonies taking place on Saturday, May 18 and Sunday, May 19.
Thirteen students, 11 of whom are from New York, will be awarded Bachelor of Science degrees as members of CNSE's first undergraduate class. Eight will receive their B.S. degrees in Nanoscale Engineering, and five in Nanoscale Science. Nearly half the class will pursue graduate degrees at CNSE; in addition, two have accepted internships, one at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and one at BESS Technologies, a clean energy company founded by CNSE students.
In addition, 17 graduate students at CNSE will receive degrees, including 13 Ph.D.'s and four master's degrees. Nearly two-thirds have accepted positions at leading high-tech companies and organizations with operations in New York, including CNSE, GlobalFoundries, IBM, and ASML.
CNSE is the world's first and only college to offer comprehensive undergraduate and graduate-level curricula focused on nanotechnology research and development through both its graduate program, which was introduced in 2004, and its undergraduate program, which was launched in 2010. CNSE's educational offerings are supported by the unmatched intellectual and technological resources of CNSE's $14 billion Albany NanoTech Complex, the most advanced nanotechnology research enterprise at any university in the world, boasting more than 3,100 scientists, researchers, engineers, faculty, and students from leading global corporations and top research universities.

About UAlbany NanoCollege
The UAlbany CNSE is the first college in the world dedicated to education, research, development, and deployment in the emerging disciplines of nanoscience, nanoengineering, nanobioscience, and nanoeconomics. With more than $14 billion in high-tech investments, CNSE represents the world¹s most advanced university-driven research enterprise, offering students a one-of-a-kind academic experience and providing over 300 corporate partners with access to an unmatched ecosystem for leading-edge R&D and commercialization of nanoelectronics and nanotechnology innovations. CNSE’s footprint spans upstate New York, including its Albany NanoTech Complex, an 800,000-square-foot megaplex with the only fully-integrated, 300mm wafer, computer chip pilot prototyping and demonstration line within 85,000 square feet of Class 1 capable cleanrooms. More than 3,100 scientists, researchers, engineers, students, and faculty work here, from companies including IBM, Intel, GlobalFoundries, SEMATECH, Samsung, TSMC, Toshiba, Applied Materials, Tokyo Electron, ASML, and Lam Research. An expansion now underway, part of which will house the world¹s first Global 450mm Consortium, will add nearly 500,000 square feet of next-generation infrastructure, an additional 50,000 square feet of Class 1 capable cleanrooms, and more than 1,000 scientists, researchers, and engineers from CNSE and global corporations. In addition, CNSE¹s Solar Energy Development Center in Halfmoon provides a prototyping and demonstration line for next-generation CIGS thin-film solar cells, supporting its leadership of the U.S. Photovoltaic Manufacturing Consortium (PVMC). CNSE’s Smart System Technology and Commercialization Center of Excellence (STC) in Rochester offers state-of-the-art capabilities for MEMS fabrication and packaging. CNSE also co-founded and manages operations at the Computer Chip Commercialization Center at SUNYIT in Utica and is a co-founder of the Nanotechnology Innovation and Commercialization Excelerator in Syracuse.
