Nanotechnology is booming, and this new technology will fundamentally change our world. The use of nanotechnology creates numerous possibilities where existing technologies offer no answer. New materials and products will emerge thanks to this innovative technology.

Nanotechnology, maximum performance with minimum size

Europe | Posted on January 18th, 2013

Nanoparticles (these are particles one billionth of a metre in size) are widely acclaimed because great effects and exceptional properties can be achieved by adding a small quantity. When materials become smaller than 100 nanometres, something remarkable happens, and these tiny particles alter the properties of base materials. Not only are the physical properties significantly altered, but quality, functionality and reliability are also improved. In addition, fewer (raw) materials are needed to achieve these better properties.

Nanops®, which stands for Nano Polymer Solutions, is an R&D and production company. Nanops® specialises in improving the intrinsic properties and durability of plastics, in particular thermosets. It successfully manages to add nanoparticles to these plastics.

The sectors on which Nanops® focuses vary considerably, given the unlimited possibilities. The sectors where Nanops® is currently active are: the coating industry (including anti-graffiti products), the composite industry and the construction sector.

The mission of Nanops® is clear: "To improve the properties of plastics, resulting in less material being needed to obtain better properties". Nanops® wants to form a bridge between the world of research and industrial applications by offering as complete a portfolio as possible within its core business, so that it can provide its customers with added value, enabling Nanops® to stand out from the competition.

An environmentally friendly and sustainable society thanks to nanotechnology.

The environmental sector is currently inundated by a wave of new ideas based on nanotechnologies. The environmental benefit of products based on nanotechnology has already been demonstrated. One of these is minimising the use of raw materials, linked to waste prevention.

Raw materials are the backbone of our economy. However, raw materials are currently being consumed at such a rate that the chance of a fair share for future generations and developing countries is being put at risk. Also, some of the current technologies for the use of our raw materials place a severe strain on the environment, an impact that threatens to exceed the ability of the environment to withstand it. Think for example of global warming and the CO2 issue.

That nanotechnology is the future was once again demonstrated by a comment from Stefan Milis and I quote: "Nanotechnology will yield a whole range of new sustainable materials. This will lead not only to a drop in maintenance costs, but also to lower energy consumption."
