Abstract:
The use of nanotechnology in modern medicine (nanomedicine) has created new approaches to patient healthcare that translates applied basic science from the laboratory bench to the clinic. One important theme in nanotechnology is in the development of nanomaterials. Nanomaterials are inherently small with at least one dimension in the 1-100 nm range and can readily interact in the physiological environment. Such materials can be used directly or indirectly for incorporation into polymeric systems forming nanocomposite materials.
One of the most commonly used materials in the development of nanocomposites is derived from the silsesquioxane family. An important subcategory and widely studied nanomaterial is the 3D cubic nanocage structure of polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes (POSS). It is well known that their unique chemical structures impart superior mechanical, physical, and chemical properties when applied to different polymeric systems.
Alexander M. Seifalian and co-workers (University College London) present a perspective of the field of POSS-based polymers for medicine and address important application areas of POSS such as cardiovascular devices and biomaterials, tissue engineering products, dental nanocomposites, antibacterial agents, drug delivery systems, quantum dot nanocrystals and biological sensors. All these attributes shape the emerging field of nanomedicine, and the creation of powerful tools in the development of novel diagnostics, therapeutics and biomedical materials of clinical significance.
