Abstract:
The European Patent Office (EPO) has issued the patent EP1636135 for "misch metal oxides and their utilization in CO2 sensors" to the Nanostart company ItN Nanovation AG (ISIN DE000A0JL461). ItN Nanovation considers this patent to be a crucial step forward in the development of semiconductive, nanotechnological CO2 sensors for the commercial market.

Nanostart holding ItN Nanovation receives patent for CO2 sensor technology

Frankfurt / Saarbrücken | Posted on January 25th, 2011

The global market for chemical gas sensors alone will grow to over 17 billion US dollars by the year 2015. A substantial share of this market will be devoted to sensors for measuring CO2 (carbon dioxide).

CO2 detection is important for numerous industrial processes - including monitoring of combustion processes during energy production and locomotion; control of ventilation and climate control equipment; as well as monitoring biological processes, such as fermentation, digestion, exhalation, and fouling. Measurement of CO2 concentrations is playing an increasingly important role in overall in environmental and emissions protection.

It has long been anticipated that semiconductive, nanotechnological sensors will be appreciably superior to CO2 measurement methods based on optical or electrochemical technology in terms of efficiency and performance.

In response, ItN Nanovation has conducted intensive research over the past few years in the field of CO2 sensor technology with a concentration on materials development. The patent consists of an internally developed, nanostructured material and the CO2-sensitive sensor coatings it is used to produce.

In the coming years, ItN Nanovation plans to work together with industry partners to develop these sensors for the market and is now taking part in initial discussions.
