The periodic table written on a single human hair
Abstract:
Here's a neat Christmas gift idea for the geek who has everything. A nanotechnology microscopist at the University of Nottingham has written out the smallest ever periodic table, on the side of a single human hair.
The table has the full 118 elements, including the newly added Copernicium (officially recognised as an element in May 2009) and all six as-yet-unnamed elements -- from Ununtrium to Ununoctium. The image is 100 microns long and 50 microns high, meaning you could print a million replicas of the tiny table on a single post-it note.
