Abstract:
The 3rd Edition of Bangalore Nano jointly organized by The Department of IT, BT and S&T, Government of Karnataka and Jawaharlal Nehru Center for Advanced Scientific Research (JNCASR) concluded on a high note at The Lalit Ashok, Bangalore, on 9th December 2010. True to it's focal theme "Frontiers of Nanotechnology: Impact on India," the event showcased a plethora of discussions, debates and presentations on Nanotechnology going beyond the present frontiers.
Bangalore Nano 2010 enabled experts, scientists, researchers, industry and start-ups to meet and exchange notes on tomorrow's nanotechnology. It was a meeting point for academia, research and industry featuring inspiring talks, high quality research papers and showcased innovative & ground breaking nano-applications.
Prof. C.N.R. Rao conferred the 3rd Bangalore Nano National Award to Prof. Ajay K Sood, President, Indian Academy of Science and Institute of Science (IISc) for his valuable contribution in the field of nantechnology at the inaugural function. The event addressed the recent technological breakthroughs and the areas that nanotechnology was most needed namely Energy & Environment, Nano Medicine, Nano Electronics, and Nano Materials.
On the whole the event had 410 delegates from 250 plus organizations hailing from 12 Countries. Over 50 eminent internationally acclaimed speakers addressed the conference, including Prof. Sir Richard Friend, Dr. Anthony Cheetham, Prof. Yoshio Bando, Dr. Dunbar Birnie, Mr. Ingo Hollein, Mr. Stefan Bill, Dr. Henning Zoz, Mr. Gregory Favaro amongst others.
Praising the organisers, Dr. Shantikumar Nair, Amrita Center for Nanosciences, said, "Excellent choice of Speakers. Well organized. Good Academic & Industry mix as well as Indian & International Scientists. The posters were very well selected."
"Nano for the Young" and "Inspirational Lectures Programme" had an over whelming response, these sessions were attended by over 1000 students.
Mr. Stefan Bill of Rewitec GmbH, Germany, who was also part of the inspirational lectures session said, "this is an absolutely fantastic event. It had students, professionals, researchers. I even got many contacts from German Companies. I will definitely come back next year also."
On the exhibition front, thirty five exhibitors showcase cutting edge products, research and innovation in nanotechnology. The exhibitors included pavilions from Germany, USA and Japan amongst others. The exhibitors were extremely pleased with the response and several business opportunities and partnerships were triggered as a result of participating in Bangalore Nano 2010. The exhibition attracted over 1500 visitors.
Speaking on the event Dr. Frank Sicking from the German Pavilion, said, "We had about 45 interactions primarily about cooperation possibilities. Most of the talks were fruitful and promising business. The event was made very well and it's a professional work. I see a tremendous growth in the Conference & Exhibition compared to last year."
Eight startups were given a platform to pitch for investments or research collaborations from the VC Community / Research Institutions under the Research Industry Collaboration Hub (RICH) programme.
Eighty Posters were presented in the "Walkway of Discovery" from some of the best institutions like JNCASR, IISc, IIT Mumbai, IISc, SASTRA University, Amrita Center for Nanosciences, Institute of Physical Chemistry, Polish Academy of Sciences - Poland, TIFR, SRM University to name some.
1st place was bagged by Ms. Anitha, Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences & Research Center; 2nd was awarded to Mr. S.M. Mohanasundaram, Indian Institute of Science; and 3rd place was awarded to Mr. K.S. Subrahmanyam, Jawaharlal Nehru Center for Advanced Scientific Research (JNCASR). The awards were presented in the valedictory function by Shri. Ashok Kumar Manoli, IAS, Dr. Anthony Cheetham, FRS, Prof. Ajay K Sood, Shri. Aravind Jannu, IAS and Mr. Jagdish Patankar.
InterlinX - The Partnering Tool introduced this year, successfully facilitated 100 plus meetings.
Shri. Ashok Kumar C Manoli, IAS Principal Secretary to Government, Dept. of Information Technology, Biotechnology and Science & Technology, Government of Karnataka, said, "we are extremely happy with the response of Bangalore Nano 2010." He concluded by announcing that the 4th Bangalore Nano will be held on 8th and 9th of December 2011.
