MesoCoat Inc. exclusively licenses transformational surface engineering technology developed at a National Lab

Euclid, OH | Posted on August 24th, 2010

This breakthrough surface engineering technology was developed over the last decade at the infrared processing center, part of the industrial materials division of Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). Through technology transfer collaboration efforts and licensing of multiple patents, MesoCoat is commercializing this revolutionary technology which enables the application of coatings and cladding materials at rates 1-2 orders of magnitude faster, and with better quality than alternate processes such as laser or weld cladding or furnace processing.

This High Density Infrared technology developed at ORNL and being commercialized by MesoCoat, enables large areas to be rapidly clad with wear or corrosion resistant metal or cermet coatings. This technology has the potential to revolutionize the coating and cladding industry because it enables metallurgical bonding of metal and ceramic coatings to be applied very rapidly and at low cost to large, previously unreachable areas due to the dimensional limitation of currently available equipments. These areas include ship decks, building supports, reactor vessels and equipments, bridges and pipes. Additional benefits include the reduced use of natural resources and potential energy conservation, and the elimination of reliance on environmentally damaging substances such as chromate primers to protect large structures. To accelerate commercialization, Mr. Greg Engleman has joined the company from the ORNL, MesoCoat has installed its own lab-scale high density infrared application equipment, and the company has executed a space act agreement with NASA Glenn research center to access the higher power equipment for demonstration and validation of the technology for leading Oil and Gas companies.

About MesoCoat
MesoCoat, the new Duracell of the coating industry, is a venture-backed nanotechnology materials science company fast becoming a world leader in metal protection and repair through their revolutionary “long life” coating and “high speed” cladding technologies. The company‟s transformational surface engineering technologies have already been the recipient of three prestigious R&D 100 awards, a National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) award for "100 year life coatings for infrastructure‟, and the NorTech Innovation Award for environmentally friendly coatings. Through Partnerships with the Departments of Defense and Energy, and leading Oil and Gas companies; MesoCoat has developed high strength, high toughness ceramic-metallic materials and high speed fusion cladding processes providing unparalleled wear and corrosion resistance; and has verified performance, productivity, and cost benefits with industry leaders in Oil & Gas, Aerospace, Energy Generation, and Maritime industries. MesoCoat is now commercializing several of their products and services that are a direct replacement for hard chrome plating, as well as weld cladding processes to address the needs of both Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM) and Maintenance and Repair Organizations (MRO). MesoCoat, Inc.is a JumpStart, Inc. and Abakan, Inc. Portfolio Company.
