The Special Issue focuses on three major fields of current endeavor in the laboratory: materials synthesis and assembly; functional materials for energy harvesting, transport, and storage; and advanced techniques for materials characterization. These fields form part of the research strategy of the institute, as the Director, Professor Jennifer Lewis, explains: "The Frederick Seitz Materials Research Laboratory houses several multidisciplinary research programs ranging from quantum materials to soft matter. Our core mission is to advance the frontiers of materials research, as highlighted in this Special Issue of Advanced Materials."

Founded in 1962, the MRL brings together world-class faculty and students in a highly collaborative research environment, and the fruits of that labor are plain to see in the issue, with articles specially selected by our guest editor, Professor Lewis. The contributions, on such diverse topics as ultrasound synthesis of nanostructures, DNA-templated superconducting nanowires, layered oxide electrode materials for Li-ion batteries, and ultrafast imaging for excitons using inelastic X-ray scattering, give a fascinating glimpse inside one of the world's leading centers of materials science research.
