NanoKTN and JEMI Announce first Nano Micro Systems Focus Group

The Nanotechnology Knowledge Transfer Network (NanoKTN), one of the UK's primary knowledge-based networks for Micro and Nanotechnologies, has announced a strategic partnership with the Joint Equipment Materials Initiative (JEMI) to launch the first Nano Micro Systems event. The focus group will look at the area of Atomic Layer Disposition (ALD) and will see presentations from key players in the industry, including Metryx, Beneq, Oxford Instruments Plasma Technology and the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC).

Presentations will give delegates an insight into the technique of ALD and how to control and monitor the processes and scale up to large areas and there will be a focus on applications in lighting displays and high performance CMOS semiconductors.

A panel session, to be hosted by Dr Rob Stevens from RAL, Professor PK Nathan from Brunel University and Ric Allott from UK Displays and Lighting KTN, will focus on the current standing of the UK both academically and industrially, and will look at where market opportunities exist and are created through commercialisation of IP as well as strategic partnerships. The panel sessions will look at opportunities in the UK supply chain and will allow delegates to question the speakers on presentation content and pressing issues to promote an open exchange of ideas.

The NanoKTN and JEMI are hopeful that the focus group will meet the objective of stimulating the formation of the complete supply chain, for successful implementation of nanotechnology in this industry sector.

"This focus group will be looking at and evaluating all the issues of the supply chain for the Nanotechnology sector looking to supply into the Nano-electronics, MEMS and other related emerging hi-tech sectors and is of vital importance to anyone who plays a role in this chain," explains Alec Reader, Director of the NanoKTN.

Reader continues, "There will be a number of exhibits available to explore which will openly promote an exchange of ideas and will be the source of much valuable information."

Key areas to be explored are the fundamentals of ALD processing, the challenges of Precursor Materials for ALD, overviews of ALD in the UK and the opportunities and threats in the UK supply chain and applications in displays and lighting.

The Nano Micro Systems focus group takes place on 31st March 2009 at Rutherford Appleton Laboratory in Didcot. Keynote speakers include Dr Robert Stevens from Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, Professor Colin Whitehouse from STFC and Mervyn Miles from the Bristol Centre for Nanotechnology and Quantum Science.
