In Milan: Foul-weather friends
Abstract:
Although its travel trench was already featherweight, Italian outerwear company Allegri has gone even further for spring '09—working with Teijin, a Japanese lab that's among the world's leaders in textile nanotech, to produce thinner, lighter fabrics made from postconsumer waste. The stuff is so tightly woven that it's waterproof even without a coating, as the image here is meant to convey. Equally featherweight are Burberry Prorsum's summer trenches, which get their water-repelling properties from rubberized silk (seriously). The fabric is thinner than paper, and virtually wrinkle-proof. In either case, I'll be happy to leave the umbrella at home.
