IIT-M develops gadget to detect heart attack
Abstract:
The Centre for Excellence of Nanoelectronics in IIT here is all set to take its recently developed low cost biosensor `iSens', which detects heart attack well in advance, to the market by the end of this year.
The Centre is preparing `iSens' (to detect acute myocardial infarction) for clinical trials and will be put to commercial production by December this year, Dr V Ramgopal Rao, Chief, Nanoelectronics department of IIT Mumbai, who heads this multi-disciplinary project, said.
"Field trials will not take time since it is only a diagnostic tool. We are talking to some Indian and multinational companies and a company in UK to commercialise the product, he said.
"Our aim is to reach this product to the primary health care (PHC) centres in the country as only five per cent of the heart patients are able to reach big hospitals while 95 per cent go to PHC or small clinics," he said adding "we can train the PHC personnel as the device will be simple to operate."
