Abstract:
Agreement Expected to Significantly Accelerate Market Access
RNT, developer and manufacturer of its patented NanoFoil®, which precisely controls the instantaneous release of heat energy for joining and reaction initiation applications, has partnered with the Kurt J. Lesker Company to expand worldwide sales and distribution of NanoFoil and its accompanying NanoBond® process. The venture is expected to accelerate access to the superior bonded target performance of NanoBond within the vacuum industry. Key markets to benefit from this partnership include semiconductor manufacturing, LCD and flat panel displays, advanced displays, glass coatings, film coatings and other vacuum industries utilizing sputtering targets.
Kurt J. Lesker Company will serve as RNT's exclusive distributor in North America and Europe, offering NanoBond bonding service for customer supplied materials, as well as full target assemblies incorporating NanoBond. Working closely with RNT, Lesker sales and service personnel will be trained in all aspects of NanoBond and the accompanying benefits to provide their customer base with the superior service they have come to know and expect.
"This is another key step in establishing NanoFoil - and our patented NanoBond process - as the new standard for the manufacturing of bonded sputtering targets for high-performance thin film coatings," noted Joe Grzyb, CEO of RNT. "We have found a strong company, touting more than 50 years of proven service, which offers an extensive catalog of system, components and materials to the vacuum industry. Kurt J. Lesker Company is a brand name we are proud to have associated with RNT."
"RNT is an excellent company and their technology represents a real breakthrough in bonding for sputtering targets," said Kurt Lesker III, President of Kurt J. Lesker Company. "NanoBond and NanoFoil reduce the cracking and stress in the target materials while adding capabilities for higher rate sputtering. The economic and process advantages make clear the need for this new technology. The new technique will improve many applications and facilitate others that are currently impossible using conventional bonding."
Benefits: NanoFoil and NanoBond®
NanoFoil® and its use in NanoBonded targets is providing immediate benefits to thin film coatings, display, optics, semiconductor, aerospace, defense, automotive and other industries seeking superior deposited films. NanoBond produces a virtually void free solder bond with low residual stress, higher melting temperatures resulting in potential higher sputter powers and greater film deposition rates. RNT's patented NanoFoil enables reaction initiation for propellant ignition, flares and fuses, making such applications predictable, controllable and far more affordable. When activated by a small pulse of local energy from electrical, optical or thermal sources, the foil delivers localized heat in a fraction of a second.

About RNT
Headquartered in Hunt Valley, Maryland, RNT was founded in 2001 by engineering veterans Timothy P. Weihs, Ph.D., who now serves as Chief Technical Officer, and Omar M. Knio, Ph.D., who is RNT’s Senior Vice President. The company develops and manufactures NanoFoil to precisely control the instantaneous release of heat energy for reaction initiation and joining applications that current technology can not effectively or economically address. RNT has also developed its patented NanoBond joining process to ensure the benefits of NanoFoil are maximized.
Commercial distribution of NanoFoil for energetics and joining applications is taking place from RNT’s onsite manufacturing facilities. The company is utilizing its financial backing from a variety of sources – including over $5 million in government grants from agencies such as the National Science Foundation – to further develop applications and processes, and craft its patented technology for additional markets. RNT has also signed licensing agreements with a number of Fortune 500 Companies. Its breakthrough technology has earned several prestigious awards including the 2005 “R&D 100” from R&D Magazine, the 2005 Nano 50™ from NASA Nanotech Briefs Magazine and recognition in The National Nanotechnology Initiative Strategic Plan in December 2004.
