Record year for nonjewellery uses of gold
Abstract:
One group is led by Professor Michael Wong, of Rice University, in the US, who has found that gold/ palladium nanoparticles are the most effective catalysts for control- ling a groundwater pollutant known as trichloroethane (TCE).This chemical is commonly used as a solvent to degrease metals and elec- tronic parts, and is one of the most common and poisonous organic pollutants in groundwater in the US. According to Wong, while palladium's advantages in TCE remediation are well documented, its cost is very high. Recent tests have confirmed that gold/palladium nanoparticle catalysts break TCE down about a hundred times faster than bulk palladium catalysts.
