Columnists: Sustainable development - A tale of one planet …
Abstract:
On the technology front, we witness minor miracles everywhere. As the iPod has shown, miniaturisation is delivering improvements in energy efficiency and "dematerialisation" - giving more services with fewer raw materials. Mobile phones are becoming business centres.
LED technology offers more light per watt. Nanotechnology and bio-mimicry offer far greater gains. Organic agriculture is a thriving business, worth $14 billion a year in the US alone. Wind turbines are generating megawatts and mega-bucks in many countries. Programmes such as Philips' "lighting the bottom of the pyramid" campaign highlight the way in which leading firms are looking to make business, and the planet, more sustainable.
