ALD NanoSolutions Awarded $748K in STTR NSF Grants

Posted on January 27, 2006

ALD NanoSolutions, Inc. has announced today the awards of three Phase I Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) grants and one STTR Phase II grant from the National Science Foundation. The grants were awarded for “Atomic Layer Deposition-Enabled Polymer Packaging for Integrating Micro-Electro-Mechanical and Electronics Systems (MEMS),” “Ultrafast Response Transient Voltage Surge Suppressors (TVSS),” “Fabrication of Coaxial Nanowires/Nanocables Using Carbon Nanotubes,” and “Benign Film Composite Particles from UVA/UVB Rays.”

ALD NanoSolutions and the University of Colorado at Boulder will demonstrate the feasibility of a novel wafer-level MEMS packaging concept with the first $100,000 grant. The processes to be developed will be compatible with most wafer-level packaging technologies being developed by microelectronic manufacturers.

For the second grant of $99,927, Particle ALD(TM) will be used to provide atomic scale insulative gaps between conducting particles in coaxial prototype TVSS devices. The electrical conduction between the particles is dominated by quantum tunneling. This gives metal insulating varistor (MIV) devices a highly nonlinear dependence with respect to applied voltage, high resistance at system operating voltages, and low resistance at threat voltages. Such devices can be used to protect the power infrastructure.

The third grant of $100,000 will be applied to composite alumina/tungsten/alumina trilayers deposited, by Particle ALD(TM), on carbon nanotubes to form coaxial nanowires/nanocables for electronic applications. The thickness of each of the layers in the trilayer is controlled to within approximately 0.1 nanometers. The novel nanowires or nanocables can be used as building blocks for future nanoscale devices, prototype power cables or “quantum wires.”

The Phase II STTR grant awarded for $448,225 will continue work to develop benign UVA/UVB sunblock materials. These composite particles may increase the SPF of a sunblock while decreasing the amount of additive needed. In addition, this novel combined UVA/UVB material will make formulating easier for cosmetic and personal care producers. This work is being done in conjunction with several cosmetics manufacturers and material suppliers in the cosmetics industry.

The aggregate $748K in grants will focus on the company’s continuing effort to establish the flexibility and robustness of atomic layer deposition processes in manufacturing custom composite particles. In addition, the awards validate ALD NanoSolutions domain expertise in atomic layer deposition technologies as well as recognize the Company’s commercial potential in multiple markets.
