"… with the use of tablets, TVs, computer screens and smart phones, there's no doubt our exposure to blue-violet light is on the increase," wrote Ronald Melton, co-author of the study, "The Lowdown on Blue Light: Good vs. Bad, and Its Connection to AMD," published in Review of Optometry. "This cumulative and constant exposure to the blue-violet light is going to accumulate over time and has the potential to cause damage to the retinal cells, which is going to slowly lead to retinal cell death and can in turn lead to AMD."

The blue portion of the visible light spectrum is the most harmful because of its ability to entirely penetrate the eye's natural filters and cause permanent vision damage. The death rate of unprotected retinal cells exposed to blue light is a staggering 93 percent. Despite AMD being primarily a concern for older people, nearly 40 percent of doctors surveyed reported seeing an increase in blue light-related damage in children and young adults.
