Abstract:
Iranian researchers at Zabul University, Sistan and Balouchestan Province, Southeastern Iran, have developed an absorbent Nano-particle which detects low concentrations of uranium in water and extract 94.5 percent of uranium from different aquatic environments.
Uranium is widely found in industrial water waste, causing a major problem in developing countries and needs to be taken out, the Iranian students' news agency reported.
The researchers used ZnO chitosan Nano-particles to extract low amount of uranium from aquatic environments. They also applied Artificial Neural Network (ANN) to optimize the process.
Mostafa Khajeh, a faculty member of Zabul University and lead author of the study said, "ZnO Nano-particles holding semi-conduction can be used as an effective Nano-particle. They can be used jointly with chitosan in hybrid form to boost their properties."
The detection limit and concentration ration were compared in the study. The results showed that the method is of higher concentration ratio comparing to other methods and also has appropriate detection limit.
The researchers first prepared ZnO chitosan Nano-particles by precipitation method, and a cartridge was filled by the Nano-absorbent.
Then the uranium solution passed the cartridge and was absorbed. Then the uranium was extracted by benzene eluting solvent.
The extracted uranium was finally measured by UV-visible spectroscopy.
The findings of the study have been published in Chemometrics and Intelligent Laboratory Systems Journal.
