Abstract:
Iranian chemistry researchers from Islamic Azad University, Karaj Branch, succeeded in the production of a type of three-dimensional nanocomposite structure by combining collagen protein and montmorilonite nanoparticles in the presence of some chemicals.

Synthesis of Hydrogel Nanocomposite Based on Protein to Eliminate Industrial Pollutants

Tehran, Iran | Posted on December 5th, 2013

Among the most important characteristics of these materials, mention can be made of their ability to adsorb some chemical compounds, specially dye pollutants existing in the wastewater of some industrial plants.

Dr. Gholam Baqeri Marandi, a member of the Scientific Board of Department of Chemistry, Karaj Branch of Islamic Azad University, explained the objectives of the research. "This research was designed and carried out because it sought a number of objectives. The most important of all was to synthesize protein-based hydrogel nanocomposite that is able to remove industrial pollutants, specially pigments, from the polluted media, and to investigate the effect of the presence of montmorilonite in this process."

In this research, samples of the base hydrogel (free from montmorilonite nanoparticles) and hydrogel nanocomposite (containing various amounts of montmorilonite) were synthesized through thermal process by using collagen protein and monomers of maleic anhydride and acrylamide in the presence of ammonium persulfate initiator and methylenebis(acrylamide) as the cross-linking agent.

In the next stage, researchers studied the adsorption of methylene green (MG) pigments and crystal violet (CV) by synthesized samples at various concentrations of pigment and at different pH values.

Results of the research showed that the synthesized nanocomposites have great ability to remove cationic pigments. Taking into account the fact that the samples could remove the pollutants from aqueous solutions at desirable rate, they can be used in refining processes in polluted areas.

Result of the research have been published in Polymer-Plastics Technology and Engineering, vol. 52, issue 3, 2013, pp. 310-318 by Dr. Gholam Baqeri Marandi et al.
