Abstract:
Battery nano-materials pioneer Nexeon has appointed Tsuyonobu Hatazawa as its new Chief Technology Officer with immediate effect. Hatazawa-san joins Nexeon from Sony where he pioneered the development of gel electrolytes and polymer Li-ion batteries.

Nexeon Appoints Industry Heavyweight and Opens Japan Office

Nexeon has also announced the opening of an office in Tokyo, Japan, its first outside the UK, and closer to many potential customers and partners in the sector. Hatazawa-san will split his time between the UK and Japan offices.

Hatazawa-san brings with him 30 years' materials development experience, much of it in batteries, and is very well known in the industry having worked under Dr Yoshio Nishi. Prior to working at Sony, he worked on optical films and polymer materials for displays at Sekisui Chemical Company.

He has been the recipient of many prestigious awards, including the Japan Electrical Chemical Technology Award (Tanabashi Award) and several Sony awards for commercially successful battery development. The appointment of Hatazawa-san will see Dr Bill Macklin move to another role within the company.

"We are highly delighted to have attracted Hatazawa-san to join our Executive team at Nexeon", said Dr Scott Brown, CEO. "His tremendous experience will provide a strong boost for our development efforts, and the new Japan office will ensure we can maintain the closest links with our OEM partners in Asia."

Nexeon has recently achieved both ISO 9001 quality management and ISO14001 environmental management certification.

About Nexeon
Nexeon Ltd. (‘Nexeon’) is a battery materials and licensing company developing silicon anodes for the next generation of lithium-ion rechargeable batteries. A spin out of Imperial Innovations, Nexeon scientists have shown that producing silicon with particular morphologies makes it possible to overcome its limitations as an anode material. Batteries made with silicon anodes have significant performance advantages over their traditional equivalents.

Nexeon is based in Oxfordshire, and has a fully automated and instrumented pilot plant with a further production asset under construction. The pilot plant closely represents a commercial manufacturing facility, and allows an accurate understanding of the processes and costs associated with making anode materials. The technology has been conceived with a ‘drop in’ approach, requiring the minimum of changes to an existing Li-ion battery manufacturing operation.

Nexeon has established a growing portfolio of patents covering materials and fabrication processes, and is building a store of available know-how which is available through licensing.
