OMBU Group Invests £3 Million of Growth Capital in Phase Focus: Fourth investment completed in 12 months for new UK Investment Company

Sheffield, UK | Posted on July 4th, 2012

Phase Focus is a UK company, based in Sheffield, that has developed and is now commercialising a revolutionary lensless imaging technology , the Phase Focus Virtual Lens®, that eliminates the need for conventional focussing devices (such as a glass lens) in microscopy and transfers the image-producing step to a computer programme. This process can generate high definition images of an object without the need for the high quality lenses that account for a significant element of the cost of high-performance microscopes, as well as enabling unprecedented clarity and accuracy in the observation and analysis of materials, processes and products.

By eliminating the need for conventional focussing devices, the Virtual Lens enables new applications and novel analytical capabilities in markets as diverse as optical, life sciences and semiconductor process control, and in multiple wavelength regimes - such as visible light, X-ray, electron, and more. By integrating their Virtual Lens Technology into existing products and into new microscopy and imaging instruments via collaborations with leading analytical equipment vendors, the Company can develop a wide range of new analytical tools that can span all aspects of the nanotechnology industry. Ombu's investment will allow Phase Focus to accelerate the commercialisation of its technology across its existing application areas as well as invest in R&D to develop new tools and applications.

The Company is the fourth UK advanced technology company Ombu has backed since its launch in May 2011. Phase Focus, like all of Ombu's companies, is based on world-class UK innovation, has recently broken through into selling its products and services, and will use Ombu's capital and management support to expand rapidly in the UK and overseas.

Commenting on the investment, Stephen Brooke, CEO of Ombu Group said: "Ombu Group is dedicated to backing cutting-edge UK advanced technology companies that have the potential to grow into substantial, durable businesses. This is a fantastic opportunity for us to partner with a company with remarkable technology that has just broken through into its full commercial phase. We had tracked Phase Focus for a few years before now and had always been amazed by the technology, so it is great to be able to back a team we have seen deliver and support them as they seek to grow their business. We really look forward to working closely with Ian, his talented team and Fusion IP along with the company's other existing shareholders to build on the great work they have done over the last few years."

Ian Pykett, CEO of Phase Focus, added: ""Phase Focus has achieved a huge amount with our technology now developed, proven and selling in the market. The opportunities for our technology are enormous so we are incredibly excited about what lies ahead for our company. We only wanted to bring in another partner if we felt they could clearly help us to accelerate our specific growth plans and are pleased to have found such a partner in Ombu."
