![]() |
Abstract:
Professor Meenan is Professor of Biomedical Materials and Head of the Biomaterials & Tissue Engineering Research Group (BTERG) at the Nanotechnology and Integrated Bioengineering Centre (NIBEC). He is also Director of the Multidisciplinary Assessment of Technology Centre for Healthcare (MATCH).
Professor Meenan holds Fellowships from the Royal Society of Chemistry; the Royal Academy of Medicine in Ireland; and the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining (IOM3). He is currently a member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Tissue Engineering, and a founding member and past president of the UK Society for Biomaterials (UKSB), and was awarded the 2010 President's Prize by the society in recognition of his contributions to the subject.
Professor Meenan's research interests concern the development of specialist biomaterials for the provision of advanced medical implants. This work involves creating new features on the surface of the materials that can directly influence the response of biological cells - a key requirement for tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. He has supervised 10 PhD students to completion and has several active international research collaborations.
Professor Meenan has published over 150 peer-reviewed papers, book chapters, reviews and conference proceedings and has presented keynote lectures in the USA, Europe and Asia. He has attained over £3.65 million in Quality-related Research (QR) funding as Principle Investigator, and is a co-investigator on awards totalling an additional £3.55 million.
