The electrical properties exhibited by graphene and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) offer considerable potential for use in numerous electronics and electric applications, according to a new report available on companiesandmarkets.com. Until very recently, high costs have proved prohibitive in terms of mass adoption of CNTs, although these are starting to decline following the introduction of cheaper methods of mass production.

Carbon nanotubes find applications within conductors, displays, energy conversion systems (batteries, fuel cells and harvesters), semiconductors and sensors. Solution processed, or printed carbon nanotube technologies have seen considerable progress, and the resulting CNTs have seen application in flexible displays, transistors and in energy storage devices such as supercapacitors.
A number of different techniques are used in the manufacture of carbon nano-tubes, including arc method, laser ablation method and chemical vapor deposition (CVD).
Factors restraining carbon nanotube market growth, other than costs, include the need for purity in the materials used, the complexities of the fabrication process, and the requirement for appropriate dielectrics.
Research and activity varies by region, for example, North America's interest centers on SWCNT (single wall CNTs), whereas Asia has focused on MWCNTs (multi-wall CNTS). Europe is also investigating this type of technology, although it is China and Japan who are leading the way.
