Abstract:
Most of the Foundations materials are very porous and have surface hydroxyl groups. These hydroxyl groups attract water because of the hydrophilic nature and similarity with the structure of water. Conventional film formers form a surface film but cannot penetrate into concrete pores due to their large micro particle size. On the other hand Nano sized Zycosil coatings penetrates into the substrate and provides water repellency into cementitious pores ( 5-200 nm), (one nanometer = 10 - 9 meter i.e. .00018 microns).
Experimentation on Transmission line tower foundation stub:
In certain areas, transmission lines have to pass through the coastal lines and this has a very adverse effect on the foundations of leading to deterioration of chimney concrete and corrosion of stub. The penetration of water, chloride, and other aggressive ions into concrete is the most important factor in the physical and chemical process of deterioration. As a part of one of the research, it was decided to excavate one foundation stub of an obsolete transmission line tower at Chennai after obtaining permission from TNEB authorities for experimentations. After conducting series of condition assessment tests, the loose concrete was removed and the stub was rehabilitated using concrete and admixtures. The finished surface has been coated in strips of 200 mm width all around the stub with film formers coatings like, Flexibond ACSR, Demech, and Nano coating like Nano Zycosil. Half-Cell potential test was conducted on the rehabilitated stub specimen. at every 10 days for a period of 90 days.
Conclusions
From the readings taken, it is observed that film formers coatings like cement fly ash slurry coating, coatings by Flexibond ACSR, Demech are inferior when compared to Nano zycosil coatings. The penetrant coating using Nano Zycosil shows superior performance and hence they may be tried in repair and rehabilitation of foundations of civil structures.
