Abstract:
PI (Physik Instrumente) L.P. -- a leading manufacturer of precision motion-control equipment for photonics, laser optics, semiconductor, imaging and nanotechnology applications -- has released a new brochure on automatic fiber optic alignment and systems and steering mirrors for optical communication.
Different levels of alignment solutions are covered, from fast XYZ piezo flexure positioners for single mode fiber launch applications to coarse/fine alignment systems to fully automatic 6-axis hexapod systems with built in scanning, tracking and alignment routines.
Alignment of Complex Optics, Fiber Bundles, Collimators, etc
The HexAlign system includes 3 linear axes and 3 rotational axes, as well as a software-programmable pivot point which enables a user to, for example, set the center of rotation to the tip of a fiber or beam waist. These features and controller with integrated alignment routines allow the HexAlign system to automatically align collimators and fiber bundles.
Additional Software such as LabVIEW VIs quickly and easily executes the most complex adjustment routines such as the automated alignment of fiber splitters. Accessories such as vision/alignment software, high precision actuators, compact translation stages, manual positioners and mounting hardware are also shown.
Free-Space Optical Telecommunication
Piezo beam steering mirrors provide the speed, stability and nanoradian resolution to keep up with the requirements of free-space optical telecommunication (FSO) a technology that uses laser beams in air or vacuum (as opposed to fibers) for data transmission. The high precision of the piezo steering mirrors allows for a very narrow beam, which makes it much harder to intercept information improving security and performance significantly over microwave data transmission.
