Area residents take the ‘nano plunge’ at Notre Dame
Abstract:
Interest in nanotechnology is spreading through the community and into the schools.
Penn High School teacher Paul Montbriand this year is introducing basic nanotechnology concepts into chemistry classes he's teaching. Next fall, he'll teach an introductory nanotechnology course.
With a $3,000 grant from the Penn-Harris-Madison Education Foundation, Montbriand has developed classroom tools to teach teens about nano concepts. One tool is a simple clothesline on which students learn to place symbols of various objects based on scale -- from those visible to the naked eye to those so small high-tech microscopes are needed to capture an image.
"So far, students seem to be enjoying it," Montbriand said.
