Abstract:
MesoCoat Inc.'s PComP™ nanocomposite cermet coatings have been identified and selected as a breakthrough nanotechnology of potential benefit to the oil and gas exploration and production industry by EPNanoNet
MesoCoat Inc.'s PComP™ nanocomposite cermet coatings have been identified and selected as a breakthrough nanotechnology of potential benefit to the oil and gas exploration and production industry by EPNanoNet. MesoCoat Inc.'s CEO, Andrew Sherman will participate in the first EPNanoNet webinar on Sept 28th, to brief leading oil and gas industry members on the company's nanocomposite coating solutions for extending equipment life and operational envelopes in extreme environments. This is the first in a series of ‘Nanotechnology for E&P' webinars to be hosted by EPNanoNet, and MesoCoat was chosen as one potentially stand-out technology over a highly competitive pool of nanotechnology based solutions companies and technologies to participate in this flagship event. EPNanoNet was launched in 2008 with the mission of accelerating the development and uptake of nanotechnology within the upstream oil and gas exploration and production industry.
MesoCoat's PComP™ nanocomposite cermet family of coatings incorporate solid lubricant and other ceramic nanoparticles into a hard, tough, extremely durable coating system that is used to protect metal parts from wear and corrosion in extreme environments, such as those encountered in the E&P industry. The PComP™ coatings are applied using thermal spray, and provide up to 10X life extension over carbide and hard chrome coatings in sliding wear applications because of extremely low coefficients of friction combined with high hardness. The nanocomposite coatings also provide substantial improvements in ductility, toughness and spallation resistance compared to ceramic coatings such as diamond like carbon, tungsten carbide, or alumina-ceramic, and are easier and faster to apply and grind than conventional, larger grain size coating materials.
Mr. Sherman (CEO, MesoCoat Inc.) has been in the nano-engineered coatings field for 25 years and has built a number of businesses as a serial entrepreneur. In addition to serving as CEO for MesoCoat, Mr. Sherman also founded Powdermet in 1996 to develop nanocomposite materials and manufacturing technologies. Mr. Sherman was a technical leader and New Business Development Manager for Ultramet, Inc., a world-leading Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) coatings company, in Pacoima, CA, and has contributed key technology development and management that have represented core technologies of six additional companies throughout the United States. He holds 14 US patents and has over 100 publications in the areas of advanced materials and coating technologies.

The company’s transformational surface engineering technologies have already been the recipient of three prestigious R&D 100 awards, a National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) award for ‘100 year life coatings for infrastructure’, and the NorTech Innovation Award for environmentally friendly coatings. Through Partnerships with the Departments of Defense and Energy, and leading Oil and Gas companies; MesoCoat has developed high strength, high toughness ceramic-metallic materials and high speed fusion cladding processes providing unparalleled wear and corrosion resistance; and has verified performance, productivity, and cost benefits with industry leaders in Oil & Gas, Aerospace, Energy Generation, and Maritime industries. MesoCoat is now commercializing several of their products and services that are a direct replacement for hard chrome plating, as well as weld cladding processes to address the needs of both Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM) and Maintenance and Repair Organizations (MRO). MesoCoat, Inc.is a JumpStart, Inc. and Abakan, Inc. Portfolio Company.
About EPNanoNet (www.EPNanoNet.com)
The Exploration and Production Industry Nanotechnology Network (EPNanoNet) is a unique forum fostering collaboration and convergence between the oil & gas and nanotechnology sectors. Its goal is to promote and accelerate the development and adoption of nanotechnology with the upstream oil and gas industry. With a strong focus on knowledge capture and sharing, members from oil and gas, nanotech, academia, venture capital and other backgrounds can interact through an online discussion forum, webinars, and face-to-face summits. The network is facilitated by OTM Consulting, an independent firm of technology management consultants specializing in the upstream oil & gas and alternative energy sectors, helping operators and their suppliers to identify, commercialize and deploy new technology. OTM currently manages more than twenty knowledge sharing networks across a variety of technology areas.
