Oregon universities, companies harvest $850 million in grants
Abstract:
Thanks to research at nearby Oregon State University, Michael Baker and 38 workers are putting final touches on a portable kidney dialysis machine poised to improve lives and reap millions in sales.
"It is no accident," says Baker, that the company he cofounded, Home Dialysis Plus, shares space in Building 11 on the Hewlett-Packard campus with the Microproducts Breakthrough Institute, a joint research initiative of Oregon State University and the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory.
During the last year, Oregon's four research universities - OSU, University of Oregon, Portland State University and Oregon Health & Science University -all dramatically increased their share of competitive research grants, collectively bringing in more than $850 million, a 19 percent jump over the previous year.
That money -- more than twice what the state spent last year on its seven public universities -- helps support thousands of high-paying research jobs and low-paying graduate research assistantships and the development of start-up companies like Home Dialysis Plus.
