September 6th, 2010
Abstract:
The lights glow orange to protect sensitive film materials. Air filters hum overhead, replacing the air in the room 100 times an hour. Goggles and a breathing mask are mandatory.
As an engineering technician in the "cleanrooms" at North Dakota State University's Center for Nanoscale Science & Engineering, Strommen can't be too tidy or too careful. Particles of dust and dirt too small for the eye to see are like boulders on a microchip.
A North Dakota native from outside Bismarck, Strommen has worked in the CSNE cleanrooms for six years. He maintains and operates the film-processing equipment used in microchip research at the center.
