CRA Clad pipe for highly corrosive deepwater oil and gas production

Abstract:
MesoCoat and NASA have completed the first milestone in their collaborative effort to modify and utilize NASA's 200 kW arc lamp system which will be used to develop methods for protecting the nation's water, transportation, and energy infrastructure from wear and corrosion.

MesoCoat Inc. Executes Space Act Agreement with NASA

Euclid, OH | Posted on August 24th, 2010

In February, 2010, the NASA Glenn Research Center (GRC) and MesoCoat, Inc. signed a Space Act Agreement which gives MesoCoat access to GRC facilities and expertise to adapt and operate the Vortek High Energy Plasma Arc Lamp for the purpose of developing and validating metal and ceramic coating processing technologies to produce large area coated and clad components, such as, pipes, plates, extrusions, or sheets.

The first milestone of bringing the plasma arc lamp system to fully operational status after a multiyear hiatus was met with the firing of the plasma arc lamp in July, 2010. The plasma arc lamp had been previously utilized to simulate the extreme conditions in the combustor of a high speed turbine engine and to determine the effects of these conditions on ceramic matrix composite combustor liners. Further modification of the arc lamp facility is underway. The goal is to incorporate a new reflector design to focus the plasma arc lamp energy that will create a line-focus "mini-sun" capable of melting stainless steel and other metallic coatings, and bonding them to the surface of steel in a fraction of a second. Development of the new reflector, which is anticipated to be completed in August, 2010, is in preparation for the cladding trials for multiple oil and gas companies over the next 18 months. This development effort has received financial support under a Technology Innovation Program (TIP) Award from the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). Andrew Sherman (CEO, MesoCoat Inc.) stated that this system is capable of cladding nickel based alloys to steel substrates, which are primarily used for extremely corrosive applications. By working with NASA GRC to bring this unique facility back up to operational status and completing initial steps towards the modification effort, MesoCoat has taken a big step to further their goal of becoming the world leader in metal asset protection and life extension.
