MesoCoat, Inc.’s Hexavalent-Chrome Replacement Material featured as Army Commercialization Success

Posted on August 18th, 2010

These microcomposite cermet coatings have been engineered at multiple nano, micro, and meso scale levels to be an ideal alternative to hexavalent chrome plating used to restore dimensions, and impart wear and corrosion resistance to mechanical components. Andrew Sherman (CEO MesoCoat Inc.) said, "The Department of Defense and the commercial industry now has the ideal replacement for hexavalent chromium. It's an honor to be chosen over thousands of other outstanding companies sponsored by the SBIR program every year."

The Army SBIR commercialization brochure states, "The annual cost of corrosion to the U.S. economy is estimated at $270 billion — $40 billion of which is attributed to the Department of Defense (DoD). Under Army SBIR sponsorship, MesoCoat Inc. developed PComP™, an easily grindable and machinable thermal spray coating composition to replace tungsten carbide cobalt and hard chrome plating in high-wear equipment rebuilding applications."

The Department of Defense is particularly interested in environmentally and economically sound alternatives to the $3.2B hard chrome plating industry. Recent changes in federal acquisition regulations have banned the purchase of systems and components which have been treated using hexavalent chrome plating techniques, creating a burgeoning demand for cost-effective, rapidly deployable alternatives such as thermal spray cermets within the military procurement system.

PComP™ nanocomposite thermal spray powders offer an unparalleled combination of toughness, hardness, low friction, and affordability that provide a unique, patented coating microstructure that combines high hardness zones of a ductile metal in an optimum geometry. PComP™ is a drop-in material replacement for the current corrosion prevention material thermal spray process, and along with the ability to use conventional machining and grinding methods make it an ideal replacement for hexavalent chromium and tungsten carbide cobalt. Faster application times, lower density, ease of machining, and near-zero byproducts ensures that PComP cermet coatings have substantially lower life cycle cost than carbide and ceramic alternatives, without the spalling issues of ceramics or production of hazardous liquid waste streams of other hard chrome alternative technologies.

MesoCoat's PComP™ technology will significantly improve wear and corrosion resistance, along with reducing spallation in a variety of applications including aircraft materials, landing gears, rail guns, bearings, military vehicles, and ship structures, resulting in significantly reduced life cycle costs for any equipment that requires corrosion resistant coating. In addition to PComP, MesoCoat is developing CermaClad - next generation environmentally safe, superior performance coating that is diffusion bonded to the applied surface. MesoCoat's affordable, environmentally friendly corrosion prevention materials technologies will eliminate the use of the currently used toxic and carcinogenic compounds and processes.
