Abstract:
Recent lab testing by NETZSCH Premier Technologies, LLC has shown that its Zeta® circulation bead mill is suited to produce nanoparticles for agrochemical formulations such as herbicides.

NETZSCH Zeta Grinding Mill Produces Ideal Nanoparticles for Herbicides

Exton, PA | Posted on August 2nd, 2010

The high-speed Zeta mill employs a peg grinding system capable of producing nano-scale particles (<100 to 500 nanometers), ideal for premixing and wet grinding of free-flowing herbicide and fungicide suspensions and dispersible granulates. Designed for circulation operation and multi-pass operation, the Zeta mill achieves high throughput rates with a consistent particle-size range.

Nanoparticle-based herbicides can easily blend with soil and attack seeds that are buried below the reach of tillers and conventional herbicides. This also allows growers to prevent the spreading of weeds that multiply by stem cutting caused by tilling. By eliminating high-maintenance tilling and manual weed-control methods, nanoherbicide use can save farmers thousands of dollars and hours of labor per crop, per year.

In addition, aagrochemicals containing conventional-size particles can be improved by adding catalysts containing nano-scale particles.

Media milling - or grinding - is the most well-established manufacturing method for nanoparticle production. The key benefits of reducing the particle size of herbicides remain the same no matter what the crop or the application. They include, but are not limited to:

* Enlarged surface area of the chemical increases product potency
* Accelerated chemical uptake by the plant
* Faster absorption to avoid biodegradation from UV light
* Increased solubility for better application through the spray tank
* Better spray application through new, smaller nozzles
* Reduced risk of dispersant settling, for increased consistency and less waste
