Nano-Scientists Find Economic Method to Dye Polyester Fibers

Iran | Posted on April 18th, 2010

Maziar Parvinzadeh, one of the textile chemistry specialists at the Islamic Azad University's Science and Research branch, studied the dyeing behavior of polyester fibers in the presence of nanoclay and nanosilica by means of clay and silica minerals at nanoscale during his doctoral thesis.

He mentioned the "Modification of polyester fibers properties for improving dyeability by dispersed colorants at temperatures lower than those of common methods" as main aim of conducting this research.

Temperatures of 1300C or higher used in industrial methods for dyeing polyester fibers demand high costs and the resulting products are not qualitatively acceptable. Therefore, considerable efforts are made to decrease these temperatures.

"We synthesized polyester nanocomposites by melt methods and investigated different properties of them involving surface and internal ones by different laboratory methods. Afterwards, polyester fibers were yielded by an optimized method and dyed at normal temperature and pressure," Parvinzadeh added.

Noting that the fibers produced by this method don't need high temperatures for dyeing, he mentioned, "They, instead, could be processed at boiling point or lower temperatures which are very economic in textile industry. This method could be suggested as an appropriate process for improving dyeability and other properties of polyester."
