Abstract:
Middle and high school science teachers will find this title strategic for teaching students fundamental science concepts inherent in the emerging fields of nanoscience, nanotechnology, and engineering. With support from the National Science Foundation, a group of scientists, educators, researchers, and curriculum developers identified nine key concepts, and the authors provide a thorough discussion of these big ideas with the intent of improving general science literacy.
Chapters cover the learning goals and how to achieve them, students' likely misconceptions, interdisciplinary connections, how to integrate the ideas into a curriculum, and new ways of considering traditional science content relevant to nanoscale science and engineering. Teachers of all disciplines will appreciate the enormous implications of the extremely tiny nanoscale phenomena that will interest students in the study of 21st-century science and motivate them to learn traditional science.
About the Authors
Shawn Y. Stevens has 10 years of research experience related to natural nanoscale phenomena. She is currently developing a learning progression for the nature of matter as it relates to nanoscale science and engineering.
LeeAnn M. Sutherland is an assistant research scientist in the School of Education at the University of Michigan. She has worked in several capacities in rural, urban, and suburban middle and high schools.
Joseph S. Krajcik is a former chemistry teacher and a current professor of science education.
