Low-carbon industries set to create 60,000 jobs, study says
Abstract:
About 60,000 green jobs could be created in Scotland over the next decade by low-carbon industries, according to the Scottish government.
A recently published discussion document forecast an additional 26,000 jobs in renewables, 26,000 jobs in emerging low-carbon technologies and a further 8,000 jobs in environmental management. These are on top of the 70,000 jobs that exist in low-carbon sectors.
RenewableUK, the trade body for the wind and marine renewables industries, argues that the opportunities from decarbonising the economy offer Britain a once-in-a-generation chance to rebuild its manufacturing base. It says: "Right across the manufacturing spectrum, from cars to trains, IT to nanotechnology, building materials to energy infrastructure, the need to cut carbon emissions is driving the development of new technologies and opening up new markets."
