Richards teacher starts three-year program at Argonne National
Abstract:
Richards High School chemistry teacher Sheri Starks traded vacation plans and sunscreen this summer for the opportunity of a lifetime in the research laboratories of Argonne National Laboratory.
The "Teachers As Research Associates" program will engage Starks in nanotechnology research while supplying her with ideas and projects she can include in her classes at Richards. The U.S. Department of Energy sponsors the program.
Starks works in the Center for Nanoscale Materials in the Electronic and Magnetic Materials and Devices Group at Argonne. Her research covers the characterization of DNA-encapsulated carbon nanotubes with atomic force microscopy and scanning tunneling microscopy. It combines biology, chemistry, materials science and physics.
