Abstract:
Comprehensive technical programs in enabling technologies for solar energy and sustainable lighting are slated for the SPIE Optics and Photonics symposium to be held 2-6 August at the San Diego, California, Convention Center.
The energy-related programs will be presented along with conferences on nanoscience, photonic devices, and optical engineering. SPIE Optics and Photonics is the largest optics and photonics meeting in North America, annually drawing an international audience of 4,500 industry, academic, and government researchers and developers. Visit the SPIE Optics and Photonics website for complete information.
Conference tracks on solar energy, illumination engineering, and organic photonics and electronics will showcase new research and technologies that address alternative, renewable, and sustainable energy sources:
* solar concentrators
* solar hydrogen
* photovoltaic cell reliability, modules, components, and systems
* thin films for solar and optical applications
* nonimaging optics
* solid state lighting
* organic light-emitting materials and devices (OLEDs)
* liquid crystals
*organic photovoltaics
* organic semiconductors in sensors and bioelectronics
* nanoscale technologies for photovoltaics.
A panel of international R&D experts will discuss commercialization of next-generation solar technologies. Moderators are Loucas Tsakalakos, GE Global Research, and Sean E. Shaheen, Univ. of Denver. The panel will include:
* Harry Atwater, California Institute of Technology
* Christoph Brabec, Konarka
* Sue Carter, Solexant
* Christiana Honsberg, Arizona State Univ.
* Darin W. Laird, Plextronics
* Moritz Riede, Heliatek
* Wladek Walukiewicz, RoseStreet Labs.
Plenary presentations by leaders from industry, academia, and government labs include:
* David Ginley, National Renewable Energy Lab.
* Arvind Shah, Institute of Microtechnology, Univ. of Neuchâtel
* Kazunari Domen, Univ. of Tokyo
* Sarah Kurtz, National Renewable Energy Lab.
* David Eaglesham, First Solar
* Raed Sherif, eSolar
* Tsunemasa Taguchi, Yamaguchi Univ.
* Junji Kido, Yamagata Univ.
* Alan Heeger, Univ. of California, Santa Barbara.
A concentration of companies offering products and systems for solar and energy-efficient technology will be included in a three-day exhibition featuring more than 200 companies overall. Several winners of the 2008 Prism Awards for Photonics Innovation -- Daylight Solutions, NoblePeak Vision, Luxtera, and Princetel -- will show their winning projects and the research behind them, in a booth sponsored by SPIE.
An extensive course program will include courses on technical topics such as photovoltaics, illumination engineering, nanotechnology, and fundamental optics, along with business and professional development workshops.
Tzivia Schwartz-Getzug, Executive Director of Jewish World Watch, will speak at a Women in Optics reception about the organization's support of the Solar Cooker Project in Darfur which provides greater safety for refugee camp residents and benefits the environment and the local economy as well.
Among several awards to be given at the event are the Chandra S. Vikram Award in Optical Metrology, to Charles Vest, President of the U.S. National Academy of Engineering and President Emeritus of MIT, and the 2009 Gold Medal of the Society, to Richard Hoover of NASA, an SPIE Fellow and Past President.
A two-day SPIEWorks Career Fair will offer an opportunity for employers with jobs to fill and prospective employees to connect with each other. SPIEWorks was recently named to the Top 100 online employment sites by Weddle's Guide.
A panel for students on how to get hired is among numerous networking activities planned for students, early-career professionals, Society members, and other conference attendees.
Conference proceedings manuscripts will be published online in the SPIE Digital Library as soon as approved following the conference. The SPIE Digital Library contains more than 270,000 articles on optics and photonics research, with approximately 20,000 new journal and proceedings articles added each year. About SPIE
SPIE is the International Society for Optics and Photonics, founded in 1955 to advance light-based technologies. Serving more than 188,000 constituents from 138 countries, the Society advances emerging technologies through interdisciplinary information exchange, continuing education, publications, patent precedent, and career and professional growth. SPIE annually organizes and sponsors approximately 25 major technical forums, exhibitions, and education programs in North America, Europe, Asia, and the South Pacific. In 2008, the Society provided more than $1.9 million in support of scholarships, grants, and other education programs around the world. For more information, visit SPIE.org.
