Abstract:
NanoProfessor Program Will Debut During the 2009-2010 Academic Year at Dakota County Technical College in Rosemount, Minn.
NanoInk, Inc.®, a global leader in nanotechnology, is pleased to announce the appointment of renowned nanotechnology expert Deb Newberry to its NanoProfessor NanoScience Education Advisory Board. As a nuclear physicist with a background in chemical and mechanical engineering, Ms. Newberry will draw from her 23 years of experience in research and executive management to advise NanoInk in its efforts to work with government leaders, communities, and educational institutions to provide a hands-on curriculum in the science and art of nanotechnology. The NanoProfessor NanoScience Education Program will debut during the 2009-2010 academic year at Dakota County Technical College in Rosemount, Minn., where Ms. Newberry serves as director of the nanoscience technology program and newly funded NSF Regional Center for Nanotechnology Education, Nano-Link.
The National Science Foundation (NSF) has estimated that the world will require two million trained nanotechnologists by 2015, drawing attention to the immediate need for students to obtain practical, hands-on experience at the nanoscale level.
"As a teacher and life-long student of nanotechnology, I understand the importance of educating tomorrow's industry leaders today," said Deb Newberry. "The NanoProfessor Program will help prepare students for employment in the numerous industries where nanoscience applications are rapidly emerging. We are thrilled to be the first college to implement this program, and anticipate that it will be a driving force in creating a skilled workforce of nanotechnologists."
The NanoProfessor Program leverages NanoInk's state-of-the-art NLP 2000 Desktop Nanofabrication System, to provide students with the ability to quickly and easily build custom-engineered, nanoscale structures in a classroom setting.
Surrounding the NLP 2000 Desktop Nanofabrication System is an exciting nanoscience curriculum that is grounded in fundamental science and engineering concepts at the nanoscale level. Students will gain valuable and insightful experience through interdisciplinary focused, hands-on experiments and manufacturing via the state-of-the-art NLP 2000 System.
NanoInk is supporting the NanoProfessor Program with several initiatives focused on directing students into the programs of participating schools. Included in these initiatives are the NanoProfessor NanoScience Scholarship Program and marketing templates that participating schools can use in marketing their new or expanding nanoscience offerings to prospective students.
"Deb's wealth of experience in the nanoscience field makes her an invaluable resource to our program, as we work to bring a hands-on nanotechnology curriculum to the classroom," said Dean Hart, executive vice president for NanoInk. "She was instrumental in implementing the NanoProfessor Program at Dakota County Technical College, and will serve as a key component in the future growth of our program."
Prior to Dakota County Technical College, Ms. Newberry worked in the corporate world for more than 23 years as a researcher and executive. She served as a space executive director for General Dynamics, a manufacturer of products for the aerospace, combat systems, marine systems and information systems industries.
Ms. Newberry also worked for NASA, where she studied radiation effects on micro and nanoscale satellites. She developed methodologies for analyzing and testing radiation on satellite systems, which has been employed on more than 14 spacecraft currently in orbit. She also held national leadership positions with the IEEE, a professional non-profit association for the advancement of technology, and the Aerospace Industries Association (AIA).
After leaving her corporate career in 2001, Ms. Newberry become a nanotechnology business consultant, and co-authored the book titled, "The Next Big Thing Is Really Small," which describes how nanotechnology will revolutionize business.
Today, Ms. Newberry also serves as executive director of The NanoTechnology Group (TNTG), which supports the facilitation and development of nanoscale science education for grades pre-kindergarten through college. She is also chair of the board of directors and director of corporate relations for Project Universe, a Minnesota-based, non-profit corporation that produces space science media concepts for education and entertainment. Additionally, she serves on the editorial board for the Journal of Nano Education (JNE), and is a member of the following professional organizations: American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS); American Chemical Society (ACS); Foresight Institute; IEEE; Institute of Physics (IoP); LifeScience Alley®; Micro and Nanotechnology Commercialization Education Foundation (MANCEF); and the Minnesota High Tech Association (MHTA).
Ms. Newberry earned a master's degree in nuclear physics from the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks, and has an extensive educational background in math, chemistry and mechanical engineering.
