Darpa’s Nanoscale NACHOS and Other Awesome Acronyms

Abstract:
Take the Nanoscaled Architecture for Coherent Hyper-Optic Sources program, otherwise known as NACHOS.

The purpose of this research project is to demonstrate nanoscale lasers — which could help advance ultra-fast, processing-intense computing systems. The specific goal is demonstrate a sub-wavelength laser: a tiny device with an optical cavity smaller than 1.5 micrometers. If it works, it would enable placing large numbers of lasers on a single silicon chip. But there must be some subliminal messaging at work here: I mean, who doesn't like nachos?
