Noted Scientist Clive Willis to be Keynote Speaker

Edmonton, Alberta, Canada | Posted on March 24th, 2009

Dr. Clive Willis, President of CWIC Inc. will make a keynote presentation at the 2009 International Conference on Nanotechnology for the Forest Products Industry, presented by TAPPI and the Alberta Ingenuity Fund, June 23-26, 2009 in Edmonton, Alberta Canada. The theme of this year's event is "Unlocking the Potential of Nano-Enabled Biomaterials."

Dr. Willis, Science and Technology (S&T) Specialist in the areas of strategic planning, innovation, research and technology management will make a keynote presentation, "*ISO/TC 229 International Standards*," on Thursday, June 25. Dr. Willis will provide one of five keynote presentations at the conference.

Prior to establishing his consulting company in 1997, he served in various executive management positions at the National Research Council of Canada (NRC) including serving as Vice-President of Research from 1993 to 1997 with responsibility for all of NRC's science and engineering research activities, major technology development initiatives, national science and engineering facilities.

More recently, he facilitated the development of major science and innovation networks across Canada among the private sector, federal, provincial, regional and municipal levels of government. His recent efforts have been predominantly focused in Quebec where he has mounted a number of major projects including NanoQuébec, for which he served as Director General from 2003 to 2005 in order to facilitate its restructuring and reorientation to better focus on the needs of the industrial community.

He has served on numerous boards and committees and co-chaired the National Technology Table as part of the Climate Change Process. He has also been an important contributor in the development of significant S&T links between Canada and other countries in North and South America, Europe and Asia. Most recently he was one of four members of an expert panel that explored Inter-sectoral Partnerships for Non-regulatory Federal Laboratories in Canada.

He has been involved in the ISO Technical Committee 229 on Nanotechnology since its creation in 2005 and is convener for Working Group 1 on Terminology and Nomenclature. He serves in a similar role for the IEC Technical Committee 113.

Dr. Willis has a B.Sc. and Ph.D. in Chemistry from Liverpool University and a Diploma in Public Administration from Carleton University, Ottawa. He has published well over 100 scientific papers plus a significant number of management reports and holds ten patents.

In addition, to Dr. Willis' presentation, the Conference's technical program will include more than 40 presentations focusing on:

  • Manufacture and Characterization of Nanostructured Cellulose
  • Managing Environmental Risks and Concerns
  • Nanocomposites
  • Global Challenges
  • Nanotechnology and Paper
  • Novel Nanotechnology Applications
  • Cellulose Nanofiber Synthesis
  • Emerging Markets
  • Nanoscale Characterization

This internationally known event brings together leading researchers,
industry experts, government representatives and other stakeholders to share advances, perspectives and discuss new ideas and breakthrough concepts on nanotechnology-based advances. More details are available at www.tappi.org/09nano.
