UTM, Irda Set Up Research Centre

Abstract:
Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) and the Iskandar Regional Development Authority (Irda) have set up the Iskandar Malaysia-UTM Research Centre (Imrec) to spearhead researches, studies, plannings and creative activities in the southern economic region.

Supported by the Higher Education Ministry and Johor government, the centre will become a platform for the university to contribute its expertise and experience in the multi-diversity development in Iskandar Malaysia.

This is highly significant as Iskandar Malaysia is a very big and long term investment that needs the continuous support of expertise, researches and systematic studies.

When launching the research centre at Danga Bay here today, Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Abdul Ghani Othman said:

"UTM's resources and knowledge in industrial technologies will be invaluable in interpreting data and understanding the various aspects of sustainable development to ensure we are able to formulate workable solutions for implementation in Iskandar Malaysia."

He said the state government had high expectation of Imrec's involvement in all areas as there were a lot of groundwork that needed to be covered in order to achieve the vision of turning Iskandar Malaysia into a metropolis of world standing.

Among other things, Imrec would be doing long term researches on environment, water management, energy development and nanotechnology.

"We have urgent need to proliferate the application of new technologies such as nanotechnology, virtual reality and animation which have the ability to position Iskandar Malaysia at the forefront of international markets and remain competitive into the forseeable future," said Ghani who is also the co-chairman of Irda.
