Leading researchers from Arkansas and around the nation will convene Jan. 8-10, 2009, for the Statewide Conference on Nanotechnology for Healthcare to be held at the University of Arkansas Winthrop Rockefeller Institute on Petit Jean Mountain.

This conference will bring together researchers who are bridging statewide talent in science and engineering at the nanoscale level with emphasis on the medical sciences. By developing this statewide partnership, the objective is to build a force for impact, support and advancement of health care in Arkansas and the nation.

The conference will examine many different applications for nanotechnology in the health-care arena with special emphasis applications of nanotechnology for diagnosing and treating cancer. Invited plenary speakers include investigators and administrators from the National Institute of Health, the National Cancer Institute and the National Science Foundation. Representatives from these organizations will impart how Arkansas researchers may contribute to specific goals these agencies have established for nanotechnology and nanomedicine.

The conference is open to interested faculty and students throughout the state. Funding is available for housing and meals for up to 70 attendees, including students, from academia, industry and government. Beyond the well-prepared topical sessions, there will also be a range of other events and activities to promote fun, interaction and influence.

Petit Jean Mountain is one of Arkansas' beloved nature retreats. Named after a 300-year-old legend and serving as the home of Arkansas' first state park, this mountain gives visitors breathtaking views, woodland trails, historic spots and natural beauty.
