The chapter contributed by the mPhase/AlwaysReady team entitled, "Wetting the Surface: From Self-Cleaning Leaves to Energy Storage Devices" describes how interactions observed in nature at the micro and nano scales can potentially be used to design man-made systems and new devices having capabilities and functionality not easily achievable without these features. The chapter goes on to describe how some of the technical design elements of the revolutionary Smart Nanobattery "mimic" properties of a lotus leaf observed in nature. The Smart Nanobattery offers a unique capability to sustain a much longer shelf life than conventional batteries used today.

Said AlwaysReady CEO Fred Allen, "We are very pleased to have our work published in this new book on emerging technologies and offer insight into the impact these technologies may have on a broad spectrum of scientific fields." The Smart Nanobattery has potential applications in biosensors, drug delivery systems and implantable medical devices such as pacemakers.
