Wake Forest teams dominate at annual Piedmont Triad Entrepreneurial Network business plan competition
Abstract:
Three Wake Forest University teams are winners of the 2007-2008 Piedmont Triad Entrepreneurial Network's Growth Accelerator Program business plan competition.
The annual PTEN GAP competition is designed to encourage and support the development of early-stage growth companies based on the quality of their business concepts and their potential for growth, including sustainable competitive advantage and the breadth of their target market, said Stan Mandel, director of the Angell Center for Entrepreneurship and executive professor at Wake Forest's Babcock Graduate School of Management.
"The PTEN GAP experience is an outstanding opportunity for nascent entrepreneurs to learn more about their ventures, personal role and the arduous journey they are pursuing," Mandel said. "I am particularly pleased that students and alumni from different MBA programs are among the winners. It shows the breadth of our student interest in pursuing entrepreneurial opportunities."
Of the eight finalists and the four winning teams, three are located in the Babcock Demon Incubator. They are:
Filigree Nanotech Inc. - Claude Hou and Zach Denton, Full Time MBAs '08 Filigree Nanotechnology is a development-stage company that has a proprietary technique for producing nanomaterials including nanowires and nanocubes using silver blended with copper, gold and even aluminum. This results in compounds with more durability, increased conductivity and lower manufacturing costs for the electronics market. Longfiber Cotton Gins Inc. - Wesley Burgess, Evening MBA '07 Longfiber Cotton Gins Inc. has invented and is commercializing a technology that is the first major innovation to the cotton gin since Eli Whitney's work. The machine increases ginned-cotton yield by removing more fiber from the seed and increases quality by retaining the fiber's length. Salzburg Therapeutics Inc. - Bill Gmeiner, Executive MBA '07 Salzburg Therapeutics is developing Cytotoxamer™ and Genotoxamer™ technologies for treatment of prostate cancer and other malignancies. Another Wake Forest team, RS Notebooks, was among the finalists. The Executive MBA '06 team is made up of John James, Denise Franklin, Jon Babek, Larry Katz and Patrick Doran. RS Notebooks will provide coordinated products and services allowing lab workers to easily record the results of their research in a way that documents their procedures and verifies the timing of their work for patent applications.
