Monash plans $45m nanotech operation
Abstract:
MONASH University has signed an agreement with the Australian National Fabrication Facility to develop a $45 million purpose-built nanotech operation by late 2009.
The Melbourne Centre for Nanofabrication, to be developed next to Monash's Clayton campus, will be the Victorian node of the national network, designed to boost Australia's presence in nano and bio-nanotechnological markets.
Monash is the lead agency for the project, a collaboration between state and federal governments, the CSIRO and several Victorian universities.
The centre will offer a wide range of services for the development and manufacture of prototypes and products from a broad disciplinary base, including bio-compatible materials for smarter medical implants, water recycling systems to improve re-use of urban water, rapid and disposable diagnostic tests to improve the detection and response to infectious diseases and energy storage and generation technology to enable breakthroughs such as using roof tiles as cheap solar cells.
