GTCC looking to add nanotech program

Abstract:
GTCC wants a piece of the nanotech pie. President Don Cameron told the school's board of trustees Thursday morning he spoke with UNCG Chancellor Patricia Sullivan on Wednesday and talked about how GTCC might work with UNCG and N.C. A&T's Joint School of Nanoscience and Nanoengineering.

The conversation came after Cameron attended a siminar in Philadelphia on community college nanotech programs presented by Dakota County Technical College of Minnesota. Cameron said he was impressed by the school's program.

Nanotechnology involves the manipulation of molecular and atomic particles to develop new materials or enhance existing products or processes.

Examples of medical applications would be the creation of implants that dissolve themselves or the precision delivery of drugs within the body.

Although still in the very early planning stages, Cameron said he envisions GTCC's program developing technicians to work in the nanotech field.
