Local Company Grows Global Business While Supporting Maryland Education
This year, RWD Technologies, a global company that develops and implements organizational performance solutions, celebrates its 20th anniversary. Since founding the company in 1988, Dr. Robert W. Deutsch, chairman, has grown the business to more than 1100 employees across the globe with revenues exceeding $180 million. Simultaneously, Dr. Deutsch's foundation, the Robert W. Deutsch Foundation, has donated more than $4.5 million dollars to Maryland colleges and universities.
Deutsch, the 83 year-old chairman, started RWD to service the automotive industry, forming a close business relationship with Chrysler Corporation to provide performance support services specifically to train personnel to launch new vehicles. Over the last two decades, the company has expanded its business to service multiple industries, helping customers across the globe to bridge the gap between complex technology and human capacity.

A History of Innovation
Since its earliest years, RWD has developed state-of-the-art custom information technology systems including the Holiday Inn Worldwide Reservation System, the DaimlerChrysler Mopar Diagnostic System (MDS2), which is currently used by 5,000 auto dealerships throughout North America, and a sophisticated data mining and analysis surveillance system for the National Association of Securities Dealers.

In 2007, RWD was named to the Inc. 5,000, which names the fastest growing companies in the U.S. In Baltimore, RWD was ranked among the top 50 company's in the region with more than 65 percent revenue growth over the last three years.
A Legacy of Giving
In addition to establishing one of the areas leading technology companies at an age when many workers would normally retire, Dr. Deutsch has also significantly contributed to Maryland higher education. The Robert W. Deutsch Foundation has played a critical part in expanding the role of technology on local campuses and enhancing the quality of technology education provided by Maryland colleges and universities.
Contributions made by the Robert W. Deutsch over the last fifteen years include:
-- $1 million to Goucher College to establish and support the RWD Gateway, which provides Internet access on campus and for remote users while supporting innovative uses of technology for teaching and learning; -- $1 million to the University of Maryland Baltimore County in support of capacity building in the Imaging Research Center; -- $1 million to the University of Baltimore to double graduate and undergraduate enrollments, add new faculty and support the work of current faculty in the School of Information Arts and Technologies; -- $600,000 to the University of Baltimore in support of programs and projects in the School of Communications Design; and -- $1 million to the University of Maryland (College Park) to support Biological Nanotechnology Research in the A. James Clark School of Engineering.
